Island Hopping: Hopping around Dublin Ireland

14 June 2017

Aloha from Castleknock Ireland (Suburb of Dublin)

I have had two great days exploring Dublin.  Lucky me to stay with friends in a lovely suburb just outside Dublin- great bus access to all the city sights AND fun evenings with Irish friends!

The sights from the past two days: Trinity College has a library with the Book of Kells- one of the oldest known books in the world.  We could not take photos, but the exhibition is good.  Crowded, but one can manage to see and to admire the workmanship of the writing/decorating of the 900's!

The Old ((Long) Library at Trinity College is fabulous:  Books, OLD books everywhere.  Great images in display cases.

An Early print from Gulliver's travels

After Trinity College, we wandered to the Dublin Castle and walked through the state apartments where Irish Presidents have their installation ceremonies.  The grand hall in the State Apartments - St. Patrick's Hall - is grand and VERY blue!

The wine cooler holds a Jeroboam of wine (that's bigger  than a magnum!). Waterford crystal of course.

A portrait of Queen Caroline!

And as many of my travel pals know, I have to visit lovely churches and cathedrals.  Dublin has two cathedrals:  St. Patrick's and Christ Church.  Both are Anglican Cathedrals, both are impressive. St. Patrick's is later Gothic style and has the tomb of Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels.  Christ Church Cathedral is Early Gothic, with a Romanesque core/center.

One of only two gargoyles on the exterior!!
AND the kneeler pads in the Christ Church cathdral reminded me of my dads  alma mater - the University of Michigan... blue and gold needlepoint UofM!!!

Dublin has a lovely botanic garden and we were fortunate to have a sunnier day to see the gardens.    The photos below are for my tree loving/hugging friends  and also my gardening friends.

The map of the gardens above, a fabulous stag horn fern below.  Hope mine will eventually look like this one!
Below:  Brachia Orchid and anthurium... a reminder of home
Lilies and Artichoke plants in one of the gardens!
Below is a Weeping Atlas Cypress tree.  o Fabulous and beautiful.

John May's Delight is the name of the peonies below.  I LOVE peonies.

A very gnarly eucalyptus tree below!

And last but not least, A pint of Guinness at the Guinness Storehouse.

Off today for Cork and the beginning of my hiking adventure.  More updates to come.

Aloha and mahalo for reading!
